Travel from FL to VA 2026

Many of you already know that Gary takes me to Florida in late December to stay for the winter.   (Yes, I'm still a Snowbird.) Then he returns to VA to do taxes.  He comes for me in May.

We travel from Harrisonburg, VA to Port St. Lucie, FL in one day.  Gary's sister, Betty Suter Wenger, gave us the key to success: "Start on the road at 4:00 a.m."

We stop only for gas and bathroom.  We have our food and drink in the car.  I drive an hour or two in the afternoon so Gary can take a nap.

We drive the 923 miles, usually getting here about 7:30 p.m.  This time we hit a traffic snarl at Roanoke that added about an hour to our usual time.

Here are a few of the "adventures" we had along the way this spring:

McDonald's Scrub-a-Dub Cleaner

There was a man in McDonald's vigorously scrubbing plastic chairs.  He would clean the chair as one would normally, THEN he would turn the chair upside-down and, using a piece of steel wool, he would literally scrub and scrub on the aluminum legs.  Strange!

Statement on Society These Days?
We observed a new policy in McDonalds that surprised us.  You order and when you pick up your food, they give you a cup with your chosen drink.  When you go to the side where the drinks were, it was possible only to get ice and napkins.  There was a sign saying that people were coming with thermal cups from their car, getting a full cup, and leaving without purchasing a thing.  Sad to say, that seems to exemplify how our society is losing basic honesty.

Food on the Road
We've learned to take finger food in the car instead of stopping to eat.  Trying to eat a sandwich while driving is dangerous.  Our go-to foods for that are Lance crackers -  cheddar and cheese crackers and peanut butter.  The peanut butter ones are easy to eat because they're round.  You can put the whole cracker in your mouth, thus avoiding crumbs in the car.  The cheddar ones are square so you have to be rather un-mannerly to put the whole thing in your mouth -- but we do!

Navigating in Buc-ee's
The big phenomenon lately are the chain travel centers called Buc-ee's. They are huge, have pristine restrooms, and have up to 120 gas pumps and a huge store.  NO TRAILOR TRUCKS are allowed. They're known for their in-house barbecue counter where employees slice fresh Texas brisket for sandwiches - and it makes the place smell wonderful.

At this time, there are 62 Buc-ee's location in 12 different states, with Texas having the most stores - about 40 stores.

OK, you get the picture.....  well, we found a good parking spot near a door and went in.  After a pit stop, we met to go out.  We went out and our car was missing!!!   Huh????

I looked and realized that the entry we came in had striped chairs.... these were solid color.  We were in a daze by then but had sense to go back in and try again.  Whew, we found the entry with striped chairs and our car WAS there.

So much for our navigating skills in Buc-ee's!

Gu-ment Workers

It took a few minutes to decipher what we were seeing on this steep bank.  Sure enough, it was “government” workers often referred to as “gu - ment” workers.

You know how it is with gu-ment workers - one to work and others to watch.

At the bottom of the hill were 2 more workers by the seeder truck.  They are both standing and watching also.

Conclusion

Gary Suter says, and I quote:
"I have resolved myself to the fact that I will spend the rest of my life driving on highways that are under construction."

Busy, Busy Days in Florida

Toffie Brownie Trifle
Toffee Brownie Trifle
My winters in Florida are fun and fine, although a bit too busy at times.  Last week I had the AC tech come to check my air conditioner on Monday.

Tuesday I went to a Social Committee and potluck brunch - even had to cook - yikes!  Everyone liked my trifle, which makes it worthwhile to cook.

Wednesday I went to our big Health Fair.  Of course, I do what most people do - stocked up on pens, pads, jar openers, magnets, and other free goodies.  The best was a free ice cream at the end!

Thursday I took my friend, Judith Beckman, shoe-shopping.  That proved to be rather challenging but we finally had some luck.  The bad part was that in that outlet mall they had one of my favorite stores - Crocs.  I ended up buying several pairs of shoes for me.

I worked the Saturday Morning Coffee Hour.  That's OK except that - gasp - I had to be there at 8 a.m.  Setting an alarm ain't for retired people!!!

I had Judith come for lunch on Easter Sunday. I did it the easy way - got 2 dinners from Perkins restaurant.  We ate in the Florida room with the windows open and had a lovely afternoon.

I got a new computer recently so have spent many hours getting it set up.  You don't realize how many details you have set until they're not there.  There is a young man named David Cheney here in Savanna Club, who is my new computer guru.  He's sharp, pleasant, patient, and so knowledgeable.

Then the laundry does accumulate and dust sneaks its way into my house!  We're starting to get warm in the day so I'm enjoying tooling around on my golf cart. We were in a drought but thankfully it rained several days so things are green again.

On Tuesday I was especially busy because Gary was arriving Wednesday.  I went to the dermatologist, went to USPS to return something to Amazon, went to the HOA (Home Owners' Association) to have some copies made, went to the monitor's office to get a guest pass for Gary, returned 2 books to the library and got 2 more. Then I went to the golf shop to get some business cards.

I came home and worked on the folders for our Welcome New Residents Meeting in October.  That's where I used the business cards and copies I had made.  (I won't be here so my co-chair, Sharon Jackson, will run it.)

Savanna Club is the name of our 55+ community here in Port St. Lucie.  We have over 1,400 homes, a full golf course, 3 club houses with pools, LOTS of activities and almost 4,000 residents to "play" with. I enjoy informing our new residents about all the amenities at the New Residents' Meeting.

I also did some laundry and moved some clothes so Gary would have a little closet space.

He arrived yesterday and I'm happy to observe that he's sleeping in.
Tax season was especially grueling this year. Gary still isn't ready to retire but he might cut down his practice.... maybe....  People have no clue how intense tax season is for a tax accountant.

Now I'll be busy because during the time that he's here, we have one main objective:   We love to eat seafood in restaurants that are on the water.  We already tried a new place on the way home from the airport.  Gary had a shrimp and scallop sandwich and I had a Caribbean salad.

That's about it for now for my leisurely life of retirement in Florida.  As they say,  "It's better to burn out than rust out."

2023 Sweetheart Dinner-Dance and Super Bowl Parties

Sweetheart Dance - February 4, 2023

Every year, all couples who live in Savanna Club who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year are honored with an elegant dinner-dance.  It was a lovely affair and also open to anyone who would like an elegant evening!

Now, I'm going to see if inserting a video works.

The large screens to view the game, to the chili cook-off, to the squares game, to the football throw, to corn hole, to yummy food, it was a fun party.

p.s.  I don't even know who was playing!  Football isn't one of my interests.  Don't hate me because I'm Football Impaired!

Busy Week in Florida

Gary and I know that some people find it strange that he drives me to Florida just after Christmas and flies home.  Then, after tax season, he flies down, vacations for a week or so, and drives me back to Virginia.

He says that if I would be there, he'd feel he should entertain me.  He has people in and out of his office all day long and the phone rings often.  So, his real work is done from 8 p.m. till 2 or 3 a.m. most every night.

I thought I could help him if I were there and that wouldn't be bad but it's not what Gary wants.  He likes to see each client in person, twice in most cases.  He sees them when they bring their papers and again when they come to sign and pick up their completed tax documents.

I have a little house in a 55+ Community called Savanna Club in Port St. Lucie on the east coast of Florida.  There is a lot to do here and I keep busy.  Best of all, it's warm down here!!!

Last week was one of those typical wonderful busy weeks.

Monday  Built Upon the Sand
House Foundation Problem
Work was done on the base of my house.  It was starting to cave in in several places. After fixing it bit by bit, the time had come to get it repaired  properly.  There was a concrete base but it had disintegrated in many places.

Still on Monday: Welcome Meeting
I had a meeting with my Vice-Chairs, Sharon Jackson and Sue Berger,  regarding the Welcome Meeting for new residents.  We hold this affair a few times a year.  I'm the chairperson but the November meeting will be led by Sharon and Sue, since I'll still be in VA.  I'll take the RSVPs and make the nametags.

Tuesday - I started the morning getting beautified at the beauty parlor.  Then in the evening, our Zoom Bible Study group met online.  We've kept it going for 2 years - even when we're in Virginia.

Gary and I like this study group because we're working straight from the Bible.  Rita Etherington, our trusty leader, does a wonderful job keeping us focused.

Zoom Bible Study  2022
Donna and Dave Waters, Doug and Jeanette Owens, Gary Suter, Allen and Rita (our leader) Etherington, MaryMay Suter, Pat and Rich Necklen

Wednesday -  Wacky Tacky Luncheon
Our Women's Club has over 300 members and we support many local charities.
Here are some highlights from our parade of tacky fashionists.

(Click each photo for larger view)

And the winner of the Most Wacky Tacky parade was................ none other than MaryMay Suter!

My jacket was pure red sequins but they don't show up in the photos.

Thursday
My Red Hat group, known as the "Hotsie Totsies", went to Stuart to Lady Ann's Tearoom for lunch.  I forgot to take pics but it was elegant.  This is what I had. I think it was pecan encrusted cod or something...

Friday - Gumbo Party with the Hattiitudes
Sylvia Foster invited us to her home and made 2 gumbo pots -  one with chicken and andouille sausage and one with shrimp and crab.  She had hot sauces on the side for those who wished to add to their dishes  We brought appetizers, wine, other beverages, and desserts.  It was a feast of food and conversation!
BTW - (by the way) - Sylvia is from New Orleans so we got authentic gumbo!

Saturday - Computer Seminar
My computer guru here in Florida is John Grubb of Keystone Computer Concepts.  https://www.4kcc.com/  He gives Saturday morning seminars in Jensen Beach once a month.  I always learn something.

Sunday
Church- FUMC First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie, FL  This is a wonderful church and I especially like our ministers, Brian Carr from West Virginia and Rad Orlandi from Puerto Rico.     Puerto Rico - Robinson School Reconnections

Book Group - There are about 10 of us who read a chosen book, then get together and discuss it.  In February, we discussed This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger.  For March it was Golden Girl by Elin Hilderbrand.   Next month we are reading When The Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkerson.

I really enjoy this group for 2 reasons:  It makes me read books and authors that I've never heard of and it's fun to hang out with lady friends and laugh.....not to mention, solve the problems of Savanna Club and of the world.

So ended a typical week in the winter version of my Snowbird Life.

Back to Business

Shame on me!  Several of you have asked why I haven't been posting on this blog - and I have no excuse.  It's partly because in my desire to get everything PERFECT, I spend too much time on each entry.  The photos take the most time but I know people, including me, like photos.

Meanwhile, it looks the quarantine for the Covid 19 Pandemic, would have given me the opportunity to catch up, doesn't it?  The quarantine started the middle of March.  I was expecting it to end with the summer weather so didn't use my time wisely.

On the other hand, when you're in your house all day, nothing happens so there's nothing to talk about or write about.

We're not officially quarantined now but neither I nor my friends and family go out much.  When we do, we wear masks, social distance ourselves from others, and wash, wash, wash our hands.

As of now, there are 4,887,648 positive cases of Covid-19 in the USA and159,596 deaths.

I won't be moving to the local retirement community (VMRC) or selling my house this summer because that community is still under lockdown. That means people aren't able to move in or out... so there are not empty condo apartments at this time.

I'm trying to start using my time more wisely and get my photos purged, scanned, and organized.  That is QUITE the challenge!

I think I'll make my posts more casual and share random thoughts.  If I slack off, you have permission to give me a nudge.  If I make grammatical errors, I plead with you to let me know.

Here's to updating Angelil Adventures.  Stay tuned.......!

Return to Florida in the Fall of 2016

My new friend, Gary Suter, drove the two kitties and me to Florida for my winter stay.  We had a marvelous time just "hangin' out" and going out to eat.  (**see below for COMMENT)
Gary likes eating seafood on the ocean or on the water.  I like that, too, so we had fun exploring Port St. Lucie, Stuart, and Ft. Pierce areas and the many neat restaurants.
I enjoyed sharing my retirement community and my church with him.

I live about 5 miles from the ocean "the way the crow flies." My 55+ community is called Savanna Club  http://www.savannaclubhoa.com/ .  It's a blast to be surrounded by 1,900 homes of mostly retired owners who are ready to go "play" at a moment's notice.

My church, First United Methodist Church of Port Saint Lucie.  http://www.pslfumc.com/   is about 4 miles away and I've made a lot of friends there, especially with my Good Grief group and the United Methodist Women (UMW).

**COMMENT:  Describing Gary as "my new friend" is an understatement.  He was my friend but we've moved into the "boyfriend and girlfriend" arena!  He is a VERY special man, that's for sure!!

Fun But Not Frivolous

Partying and playing seem to be what I notice as I view many of my blog posts.  But that is only the tip of the iceberg of what these events are really about.

The people of Savanna Club Community give to and support a variety of different charities

For example, our Women's Club has over 300 members and we donate thousands of dollars.  We especially like to support local charities, including anything from cancer, to Boys and Girls Club,  to the local food bank, to Toys for Tots (and a program like it), to shelters for battered women, to the blind, to veterans, and many, many  more.

This giving makes our "fun" have a purpose that is worthwhile.  When people work together they can make great accomplishments.

Lovely Luau

When it was announced that our next Women's Club activity was going to be a luau, I inwardly groaned because at my age, a swim suit isn't my favorite garment to wear.  But this luau was different. The theater (there are over 300 members in the Women's Club) was beautifully decorated, the food was great and the activities and entertainment were top-notch.

The appetizer table featured a tree made of pineapples and other fruit.
(Wish I had taken a photo of the fruit appetizers added to the table.)
The monkeys were made of various fruits and were especially clever.
Once again Wendy MacArthur and Judy Pagenkop's creative skills brought joy to everyone.
I had the fun job of giving out the leis and our dancer greeted and took tickets.
The room was beautifully decorated and made even better
with the rich, cheerful colors of the mumus.
I had a tropical dress so wore it instead of a mumu.
They had a mumu parade and awarded prizes.
Marcia Tarantino and Signe Lincioni won for most creative.
The Women's Club president, Linda Houlihan, ran the meeting.
Most all of our events are fundraisers for local charities.
Our professional dancer added yet another thread of authenticity.  She danced the hulu and other types of dances.
One great advantage of decorating and planning for a group of ladies is that every detail is noticed, admired, and appreciated.  Men - not so much....!
All in all, it was a perfectly lovely luau! Aloha!

I shall try my skills to see if I can post this 34 second video.  It takes a little time to download and stopped a time or two but finally continued.

Fall Fun in 2015

Fall here at Savanna Club is always busy and includes fun fellowship with friends.

Hoedown
Local residents put on this show and I am always amazed and proud to think that these singers and dancers are my neighbors!  People in the audience are encouraged to wear Western attire and you know how I enjoy dressing up!
Halloween
I am on the Social Committee so went early to finish decorating.  My friends, Sue Bruschetti and Joan De Planche.
Here are a few of my favorite costumes this year.
Wonder how this Minion got the yellow to stay on his beard?
Pizza, anyone?
I wasn't sure if the grapes and Gangstas were together or just standing together.
The Nerdy Physics Professor
"The Kiss" group had some scary make-up that stayed on all evening.
My gypsy wig and scarf were from Glen's Fair Price store in Virginia.

Cotton Candy and Popcorn.  THE most creative costumes I've ever seen!
(The gals used 65 yards of tulle for their dresses and used hula hoops to hold their skirts out.)  They also have very cooperative husbands!

Christmas Golf Cart Parade
I've always enjoyed seeing the decorated golf carts.  This year we had only about 45 entries because of impending rain (it waited until the afternoon).  The sheriff led the parade as they went throughout the streets of Savanna Club.  I tend to see the "gray" in many things but as a judge, I had to make decisions!

Decking the Halls
The Social Committee decorates the clubhouses and grounds around Savanna Club.   .
Wendy MacArthur and Judy Pagenkop have found their calling!  (You just saw them as Cotton Candy.)  They worked all year, hitting yard sales, thrift shops, and sales so as to get the most for the social committee's budget.
It took a whole crew almost a whole day to put up all their beautiful creations.

What a privilege it is to live in a community that is so active.
