My Mother, Frances Freeman May
July 15, 1925 ~ January 16, 2011
Dear Mom,
Though you've left from here and gone away
An essence of you is left to stay
It will linger on the wind
And sing in the breeze
And in the scent of flowers
Though you've left from here and gone away
An essence of you is left to stay
It will linger on the wind
And sing in the breeze
And in the scent of flowers
You are memories
In the breath of a whisper
And in the mist of rain
In the sparkle of dew drops
Your essence remains.

We've been expecting a phone call from the nursing home (in Texas, near my brother) any moment since November. We had all expressed our love and thanks and told Mother it was OK for her to go on to heaven. But, her physical body lingered and she was basically comatose. My brother, Phil, had slept on a bed in her room for almost two weeks.
A friend of mine pointed out that some people prefer to be alone to die. I voiced my thought that Phil had gone far beyond the call of duty and it was OK if he wasn't there at the moment she passed away....I thought he needed some rest.
So, last night about 10 p.m. Phil and Maribeth again expressed their love and thanks. Then Phil said, "We think if the angels come for you tonight, you should go with them......". They were astounded that Mother responded -- they could tell by the expression on her face. He told the nurses he was going home to get some rest.
In church yesterday they played “Surely the Presence of the Lord is in this Place'”. That line, “I can hear the rush of angels’ wings” really struck me and the song replayed in my mind all day.
At a little before midnight, the nursing home called. There WAS a rush of angels’ wings and Mother went with them to her new home in heaven.
Maybe God’s plan gave us time to see that Mom had no quality of life at all and that made us realize she’d be better off in heaven. The reaction we all had was, “What a RELIEF to know she’s free.” How blessed we are to KNOW where she is.
We will all be going to Virginia for her funeral this coming weekend. We thank all our friends and family who have supported us through these difficult times.

We must celebrate life to its fullest, opening our arms to God and each moment He gives us; treating each other with respect. And when our time comes, we can enter heaven peacefully - without regret. These are the things worth holding on to. (Author unknown)

We'll miss Fran--she was a very special person. It seems odd now to think that I knew her a good while before I knew you--funny how life works.
